In the next article in this series, we speak to another European employer to hear their advice for jobseekers. This time, we interview Human Resources Manager Anna Rinnekallio of Finnish corporate recruitment agency Go On Lappi.

From an employer’s perspective, what makes a good CV stand out from a bad one?

  • The perfect length is 1-3 pages, in PDF or Word format. The internet is full of easy, simple CV builders and templates!
  • Can be visual, but should be easy to read, written in language used in the recruitment process.
  • Should summarise your knowledge, education, work experience, courses, languages and other important information.
  • It is easier to read a CV organised by topic and chronologically, with short descriptions.
  • A picture gives personality to the CV, but it is not mandatory. Pictures should be simple, high quality, recent, and show your face.
  • Most importantly, the information should be true and up to date.

What are the most effective ways to make a good impression in a job interview?

  • Be there on time and be prepared.
  • Go to the employer’s website to get to know them and the position. Think about why they should hire you: your strengths, experience, education, how you will be as an employee.
  • The interview is a good opportunity to ask questions. Prepare them in advance – this shows you are interested!
  • In the unlucky event that you cannot attend, remember to cancel or re-schedule it – do not just not turn up!
  • For online interviews: If you are not in the same country, check the timezone. Double check that your internet connection, microphone and camera work, and you know how to log into the system. The setting should be calm, so you can focus.

Do you check a candidate’s social media profile before hiring? If yes, what do you look for?

No, we do not, unless the applicant has contacted us via LinkedIn or added their profile or blog to their application.

What advice do you have for candidates applying from outside your country?

Before applying for a job in a new country, do some research. There is a lot of valuable information available about moving to and working in Finland. It is good to research:

  • the country and its regions
  • whether you need a residence or work permit, and if yes, how much this costs and how long the process takes

It is also good to know about:

  • salaries and living costs
  • the work culture and work-related requirements and regulations
  • language requirements.
