The booklet, entitled “Making it Work in Denmark”, follows the trials and tribulations of eight people, all from very different walks of life, who left their homes, friends and families to start a Danish adventure.
Workindenmark is a public employment service which aims to help international candidates find a job in the Danish market, and assist employers in finding staff for difficult to fill positions. It produced the booklet as a means to give a real sense of what it means to relocate and live in Denmark as an expat.
“Making it Work in Denmark” showcases the wealth of opportunities within the Danish job market. The individuals featured in the booklet found new positions in a variety of professional fields, such as engineering, healthcare, life sciences, communications and IT.
The booklet provides an insight into the reasons for the move, first impressions of the country and the culture, the difficulties people faced and how they overcame them, and the little nuances they found on arrival.
As Pedro Leitao, who moved to Aars from Lisbon, Portugal mentions: “The biggest surprise for me has been that the Danes were so open... after my second week I already had an invitation to dinner.”
Others explain their surprise at the lack of hierarchy in the Danish management structure, which allows for faster and easier career progression than in some other countries.
The booklet gives a deeper understanding of the work-life balance in Denmark. As Fabrizio Moroni, who is from Milan but now a resident of Skanderborg, says: “I have been really surprised by the fact that things are more relaxed compared to what I am used to, but still very productive... Here I work less, but more focused. That is a big difference in work culture.”
The booklet gives you a real feel for the reality of making such a move. It is more than statistics and numbers, but real-life people and their experiences, told in their own words.
