Always read the articles before you share them
Articles on the web often have misleading titles that simply aim to attract clicks. Reading articles before sharing them will allow you to fact check them and make sure they present views and information that you or your business agree with. This will also allow you to include your professional opinion in the post, which will provide a useful insight to your social media followers.
Be relevant and newsworthy
Make sure the content you publish is relevant to your area of expertise and presents new, interesting information. Do not overwhelm your followers with too much information. Allow them to digest your posts and interact with them. If your focus is on quantity rather than quality, your followers might think that you are simply posting content for the sake of it, which will reflect badly on your reputation.
Return messages promptly
Getting back to messages and queries in a timely manner always leaves a good impression. Even if you cannot answer a message right away, make sure to send a “holding reply”, such as “Thank you for your message, I will get back to you as soon as possible.” And make sure you keep to your promise!
Use good grammar
Social media users will rarely recognise a well-written post, but they will most definitely notice if your post has typos and other mistakes. Bad grammar can make you appear less trustworthy and can affect your professional reputation. Always take the time to check your posts for mistakes – use a spell-checking software or have someone else review them before they go live.
Follow hashtags
Following hashtags based on your professional interests will allow you to find like-minded people with whom you can interact. This is an easy way to build an audience and develop a reputation as an insightful person.
Use Twitter lists
Twitter lists make your feed manageable and targeted. You can choose an area in which you want to be known as an expert and build a list of people who are talking about that subject (see the hashtag tip above). That way, you can focus your attention on interacting with a relevant group of people. Twitter lists are especially useful if you have more than one area of expertise.
