Labour market

As of 30 June 2024, about 40 687 people lived in Liechtenstein. 

As to 31 December 2023, 20 786 people were active on the labour market in Liechtenstein. The employment rate was 78.2%, 7.6 percentage points higher than the EU27 average and 3.2 percentage points higher compared to 2018. In 2023, for women, the employment rate was 73.1% and for men, the employment rate was 83.4% (20-64 years).

In 2023, the unemployment rate nearly matched the level registered in 2022. In 2023, the unemployment rate (1.4%) was lower compared to before the pandemic, when it equalled 1.7% in 2018, and 1.5% in 2019. The unemployment rate is consistently below the EU27 average. In 2023, it was 4.7 percentage points lower in Liechtenstein than in the EU27, noticeably lower compared to the EU27 average.

In 2023, the employment rate was the same for both Liechtenstein citizens and foreign nationals, at 78.0%.

At the end of 2023, 65.3% of the workforce was employed in the services sector, 34.1% was employed in the industry sector, and 0.7% was employed in agriculture.

In Liechtenstein, 88.2% of the companies had fewer than 10 employees, 9.6% between 10 and 49 employees and 2.2% had 50 or more employees. In the last 10 years, the number of companies has increased by an average of 2.8% per year.
