Ageing workforce
As in many European countries the workforce in Sweden is ageing. The relatively low birth rate combined with decreased immigration makes the ageing workforce a growing issue. There are regional differences, in rural areas the concerns regarding an ageing workforce are greater, and several regions with a low population density also have a decreasing population. In such regions labour shortages are expected to increase, especially in the public sector.
Green Transition
Green transition is an international trend with a major effect on the Swedish labour market. In the northern parts of Sweden, the renewable energy sources such as wind and hydro power combined with vast natural recourses, makes the region a centre in the green transition. Thousands of new job opportunities have already been created in the northern parts of Sweden, and the green industries are expected to grow further in the decades to come, which increases the labour demand.
Remote work
In 2023, 31% of employed persons in Sweden sometimes worked from home, compared to 13.3% in the EU27. Additionally, 14.3% of employed persons in Sweden usually worked from home, while in the EU27 it was 8.9%.
