TuriAzores is a small tour company in the Azores islands, which focuses on guided tours and outdoor activities. Its director was looking to recruit international staff and so decided to take part in the European Online Job Day event known as Seize the Summer, held in February.
On the same day the event was taking place, Laura Combrié from France was browsing the vacancies online. She saw TuriAzores’s opening for tour guides and minivan drivers and applied by calling the company. The company immediately showed an interest in Laura’s profile and decided to hire her.
TuriAzores is based on Terceira, part of the Azores archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean. “We specialise in city walking tours, hiking and trekking, van and bus tours and so on. At the moment, our team has four guides,” director Miguel Mendonça explains.
“We decided to take part in the EURES job day because we needed to hire someone who was fluent in French or German. I was also looking for someone who was open to new experiences and horizons.”
The recruitment process was easy, he says, and he wouldn’t hesitate to recommend the event to other employers or jobseekers.
“I was looking for information about the job market in the Azores through the EURES e-chat service,” says 27-year-old Laura, from the Ardèche region of France. “The Portuguese adviser who answered my questions told me about this event and invited me to sign up for it. I found a list of companies to which I sent speculative applications. The chat service was difficult to understand at the beginning, but I would recommend this kind of e-event, as it’s another way to find information.”
Laura is now benefitting from Your First EURES Job support with moving to Terceira and learning Portuguese.
The event, which targeted the tourism and hospitality industries, was a collaboration between EURES Portugal, Croatia, Slovenia and Spain, with Italy, Greece, Malta and Cyprus also participating.
“Most employers were impressed by the number and quality of the applications they got,” says Ana Margarida Silva of EURES Portugal, “and they have shown an interest in participating in future editions.”
